When you’re having a bad week, it’s the little things that matter:  That special cup of coffee, a bubble bath, 5 miles on your favorite jogging path, your dog running up to greet you when you walk in the door.

Well I had a shitty week.  So here are the things that mattered:

My friends.  Always good for a laugh…or to put me in my place. It does need to happen from time to time.

Sunshine. It’s been raining here for two weeks straight!  Yesterday we finally got a few hours of sunshine, so I went for a walk with a good friend.  It really cleared my head and took my mind off of some things that had been eating at me.  Sunshine + exercise = good.

My own cooking.  I went 3 years without cooking.  That’s right – when I moved back in with my mom, long story short I didn’t need to cook and they are some picky eaters so I just gave up on cooking.  Sure I was able to squeeze in a sandwich of my own here and there, but for the most part I was eating boxed and frozen food or eating out.  So when I get to cook spaghetti my way, masala, baked potato soup, or even breakfast, I am pretty happy.  There’s nothing like a home cooked meal.

Crossword puzzles.  Do you know there are people who actually don’t know how to work crossword puzzles?  Like, they can’t fill in even one answer on the most simple of puzzles?  It blows my mind.  So here I’m grateful for the escapism that the puzzles provide, their ability to help me fall asleep, and my ability to comprehend this wonderful pastime.

TV. I usually brag about how little I watch TV, then I discovered DVR.  I keep up with about 10 shows now, and it’s actually kind of difficult!  Thank goodness for DVR and Hulu!  Of course I’m going to tell you what shows I watch: The Office, 30 Rock, Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, Flash Forward, Glee, Army Wives, Drop Dead Diva, Dollhouse, and Medium.  I wish they hadn’t canceled Life on Mars.  At this point I’d like to acknowledge how wonderful it is to live alone and not have someone talking over your show, or dissing it, or changing the channel.

Good quality girl “stuff.”  Good makeup, Noxema, my $30 French face wash, a soak in my garden tub, my favorite green tea shampoo, sheets that feel like a soft, worn-out t-shirt (in my favorite color, of course), my super-girly canopy bed complete with sheers (again in said favorite color) and a fantastic cushy mattress, great heels, yadda yadda you get it.  This stuff is good.  It makes a difference.

I could go on forever about all the stuff and things that make my life a little easier – hey, let’s not forget Dr Pepper – but I won’t bore you further.  Sometimes you just find yourself grateful for the little things.
